Free SEO title tag and meta description generator

By Charles Summers · Updated · Free, no signup

Short answer

This tool generates five title tag options and three meta description options, then measures each one against the limits that actually cause Google to truncate them in search results: roughly 60 characters or 580 pixels for titles, and 150 to 158 characters for descriptions. Every option shows its exact character count and a pass or fail flag, so you are picking from measured copy instead of guessing whether it will get cut off.

What does this tool actually do?

This tool generates five title tag options and three meta description options, then measures each one against the limits that actually cause Google to truncate them in search results: roughly 60 characters or 580 pixels for titles, and 150 to 158 characters for descriptions. Every option shows its exact character count and a pass or fail flag, so you are picking from measured copy instead of guessing whether it will get cut off..

It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, no account is required, and there is no usage limit, because there is no cost per run to control.

What does the output look like?

This is the exact output the tool produces from the example inputs. It is generated by the same code that runs when you click the button, so what you see here is what you get.

Frequently asked questions

How is the pixel width calculated?

Google renders title tags in a proportional font, so character count alone is a rough proxy. This tool approximates pixel width at 9px per character on average, which is close enough for mixed-case English text in Arial-family fonts to flag titles that are genuinely too long. It is an estimate, not a pixel-perfect render, so treat a 580px+ flag as "recheck this" rather than a hard fail.

Why 50 to 60 characters for titles instead of a fixed limit?

Google does not truncate at a fixed character count, it truncates at a pixel width, and wide characters like W and M eat that budget faster than i or l. Fifty to sixty characters is the range that reliably stays under the roughly 580px cutoff for most fonts and case mixes, which is why this tool flags anything over 60 rather than promising it is safe up to some exact number.

Why do descriptions target 150 to 158 characters and not the old 155 rule?

The old "155 characters" guidance predates several SERP layout changes. In practice descriptions between 150 and 158 characters use the available space without getting cut mid-sentence on most result types. This tool flags anything under 150 as thin and anything over 158 as a truncation risk, because Google frequently rewrites descriptions anyway and a clean, complete sentence gets kept more often than a fragment.

Does Google always use the description I write?

No. Google rewrites meta descriptions on a large share of queries when it thinks a snippet from the page answers the query better. Writing a tight, on-target description still helps, because it is what gets used for branded queries and it is the copy people see when they share the URL, but do not expect a 100% match rate between what you write and what appears.
